Hollywood Brass and YouTube Strivers Split the Streamys

In the end, the Streamys—which we previewed this weekend—were a draw, with the studios and the independents each taking home major awards, and seasoned Hollywood talent splitting the spoils with the YouTube “kids.”

Sony’s online studio ended up taking best drama for its slick series “The Bannen Way” (above), though chief rival “Compulsions” did manage to squeeze out a best writing award. And there just wasn’t enough James Cameron-worthy resentment to topple the bearded force that is Zach Galifianikis, who won best male actor in a comedy series and best comedy series for his FunnyorDie interview show, “Between Two Ferns”—even though he was a no-show at the ceremony. As for Illeana Douglas, her series won an award for best ensemble cast, but it was the young, plucky internet phenom Felicia Day, creator and star of “The Guild,” who beat out veteran talents including Douglas, Lisa Kudrow, and Justine Bateman for best actress. Day had no success in Hollywood before her web series took off, getting rejected repeatedly by casting directors and producers.

A major shout out to the peeps behind Crackle.com‘s game changing web series The Bannen Way. The sexy, serialized drama about Neil Bannen (Mark Gantt), a thief caught between the mob, the cops and a hard on, cleaned up at the 2nd Annual Streamy Awards Sunday night!

The Bannen Way took home the awards for Best Web Drama (Gantt and Jesse Warren), Best Directing for a Drama Web Series (Warren), Best Male Actor in a Web Drama (Gantt) and, as previously reported, Best Editing for a Web Series (Zach Arnold). The 2nd annual Streamy Awards, which took place Sunday night at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles, were a wild, rough, disorganized and freewheeling antidote to usual award-show decorum, as befits an awards show devoted to web-only television programming, ranging from professional productions to bargain-basement DIY shows.

Finally, after months of preparation, after thousands of Twitter nominations were parsed down to hundreds of shortlist nominees which were then trimmed down to the list of official nominees, the International Academy of Web Television announced the winners of the 2nd Annual Streamy Awards during a live ceremony hosted by actor and comedian Paul Scheer at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. There were quite a few unexpected twists and turns along the way but a brave crowd held their own for the 3 plus hour ceremony celebrating the best and brightest in New Media.

Kudos to Zach Arnold, who took home an award at yesterday’s Streamys Craft Awards for Best Editing in a Web Series. Arnold netted the accolade for his work on the insanely hot, well-written, directed and acted Crackle.com web series The Bannen Way. This is no doubt the first of many Streamys Mark Gantt and Jesse Warren’s breakthrough web serial— which costarred three of my fav-o-rite sudser alums, One Life to Live‘s Brynn Thayer, General Hospital’s Vanessa Marcil and The O.C.’s Autumn Reeser— will take home this Streamys Weekend, as the soap opera for boys is nominated for seven awards! Since The Bannen Way leapt into our monthly webisodes chart and was nominated for several Streamy Awards, we decided it would be a good idea to find out what the fuss is about.

We caught up with The Bannen Way’s executive producer and star Mark Gantt — who co-created the project with director Jesse Warren — to discuss the drama, the deal, and the next steps for Bannen.

Since its January 6 premiere, the action web series The Bannen Way has raked in more than 13 million streams, making it the fastest growing property on Sony’s Crackle () digital video network. Loaded with crime, gadgets, sexy cars, salacious scenarios and high production costs, the 16-episode series is intended as a vehicle for Crackle to reach a demographic of men 18-34 years old.
